I feel that a lot of my students don't know their times table or basic skills in general because they're too dependent on the calculator from a very young age.

Here are instructions for making these cheap white boards. They actually turn out really well. And cheap erasers can be white socks! (buy cheap new ones otherwise the kids are skeeved out) But they work great -- little kids will even wear the sock on their hand when they erase!

I always wait until July when Target and Walmart have a zillion items on sale. I buy a couple or three hundred folders at 8-10 cents each. Crayons, glue, markers, and spiral notebooks are all on sale for about 10-20 cents each. I stock up for the year.

Another saver...student whiteboards can be made by cutting a shower board into squares. It costs about $15 for a class set. My students use them in math, language arts, and jigsaw reviews.

Thank you Debbie for sharing the way you take attendance and do homework. It sounds like a wonderful idea. I am going to try it out in the upcoming school year. I hope that other teachers will try it out.

I made an enlarged copy of the seating chart and put it between two sheets of overhead plastic using paper clips. Then, using a marker, I can take attendance and check homework. Later when the students are working, I can transfer the records over to my computer. This worked so well that I have shared it with lots of other teachers.
